Humanity built civilization on agriculture itself, beginning over 10,000 years ago. From the earliest agrarian communities to today, we have always gathered together over the shared necessity to produce and enjoy good food for sustenance. So much has changed, but at the same time so little has changed.
Welcome to Flourist. We've been building community around the ancient practice of flour milling since 2014.

Flourist exists to build community. We gather around the flour mill, and the good food that's made from fresh, thoughtful ingredients.
We're here to embrace an old way, a slower way, and a more connected way.
Edible transparency
Fresh Milled Grains
Our stone mills slowly and gently crush organic grains to bring you flavourful, highly nutritious and digestible flour that is alive with vitality. We mill all of our flour fresh to order, and we store it in the fridge to protect its precious oils. Our bakers work with ancient methods to bake bread that is naturally fermented, highly digestible, and tastes like bread should taste. We make almost everything produced in our bakery from scratch, using our own flour and the best ingredients we can find.
By working directly with Canadian family farms, we connect farmers to the people they feed in a way no one else has before. We give a human face to the cornerstone of our diets and create a bond between people and the food they eat most often.
Flourist was co-founded in 2014 by Janna Bishop and Shira McDermott, a clothing designer and food industry pro respectively, to fill what they saw as a gap in the growing farm to table movement, and to provide supply chain transparency in a whole new food category. We help people get curious about where their food comes from and make informed choices about what they’re consuming.

Our Community
In 2019, we opened our flagship retail store on Commercial Street in East Vancouver, showcasing the foods we love to eat every day.
Today our beautiful space is a neighbourhood hub of activity, where friends can gather over a meal, a cup of coffee, or a pastry - and catch up, shop, browse recipes or all of the above.
We exist to share in the good feelings that come with a more nutritious, transparent food supply. We do this in celebration of community. The best things in life are better when enjoyed together, with love.
