Our Story

We work exclusively with Canadian family farms to source premium local grains and beans. Then we stone mill the grain in-house, to order.

OUR PHILOSOPHY: KNOW THY FOOD

A healthy community is built on healthy food. And healthy food depends on how it’s grown, harvested and prepared. We think the question “where did your food come from?” is one each of us should be able to answer. Traceable food is trustworthy food. Clarity begets health. We focus on grains because that’s where we can make the most impact. It’s a cornerstone of our kitchens. Grains allow us to go big—to give a lot of people access to nourishing food.
We share the tools, education and community people need to access, cook and eat nutritious, whole food. And the more people crave traceable grains, the more family farmers we can partner with. Their craftsmanship becomes more accessible, and people build a stronger connection to where and who their food comes from.

Our vertically-integrated supply chain connects Canadian farmers directly to people who value quality and craft. This isn’t just about a beautiful loaf of bread (but damn, is bread delicious). It’s about protecting our farmland and creating food security for future generations.

In 2013, two friends set out to create a company that celebrated grain and bean farmers, while providing a much needed connection to higher quality, fresher flour and dry goods. Flourist was co-founded by Janna Bishop and Shira McDermott, a clothing designer and food industry pro respectively, to fill what they saw as a gap in the growing farm to table movement, and to provide transparency in a whole new, untouched food category.

WHAT WE DO

We work exclusively with Canadian family farms to source premium local grains and beans. Then we stone mill the grain in-house, to order.

HOW WE DO IT

We sell our flours, beans, grains, prepared food and kitchen essentials online and in our bricks-and-mortar retail space.

WHY WE DO IT

A stronger supply chain. More nourishing food. Fresher flavours. Local, traceable food is better for all of us, in every way.

WE'RE IN THE BUSINESS OF NOURISHMENT

Nourishment is the heart of everything we do. It’s how we measure and define quality at Flourist. Keeping nourishment as our north star informs how we take care of our team, our community, our farmers and our families. This is the lens through which we plan and expand—how can we offer a more nourishing environment to work,
to break bread, and to grow a business.

EVERYBODY'S AN ARTISAN

You don’t need to go to culinary school to create exceptional meals. You just need quality ingredients and a little curiosity. We inspire at-home bakers and chefs to experiment in their kitchens. We capture the excitement of grains by creating, testing and sharing new recipes every single week, filming how-to videos and hosting baking workshops. Our approach is rooted in empowerment and helps to build a supportive, generous community—no prior experience necessary.

WE'RE A CONNECTION POINT

We connect farmers to the people they feed in a way no one else has before. We give a human face to the cornerstone of our diets and forge a bond between people and the food they eat most often. We help people get curious about where their food comes from and make informed choices about what they’re consuming. The more conversations and awareness we can facilitate, the better.

MILLED TO ORDER

A big revelation for us: the new way isn’t necessarily the best way. By looking to ancient milling practices, we tapped into a more sustainable and rich way to produce our products—one that connects tradition with modern living. The flavour and nutrition of whole-grain stone-milled flour tops processed, store-bought alternatives—and it’s easier to digest. Our mill grinds the entire grain kernel, including nutritious b-vitamins, antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids. Industrial flour producers remove portions of the grain to extend its shelf life—stripping away the heart of the grain. The Flourist difference? Fresher flour that’s free of chemicals and bleaching. It’s flour in its most natural form.
