Our Flourist Black Beans are high in protein and fibre and are excellent used in soups, salads, and bean dips. They have an amazing texture and are a great alternative to canned beans. We always recommend to soak overnight or for at least 6-12 hours before cooking for best results.
Our Black Beans are grown by H&M Farms in Altona, Manitoba. Learn more about Kyle Friesen of H&M Farms here.
Here are our favourite cooking methods for making the most of our Flourist Black Beans.
Boiling Method
Soak Black Beans for 6-24 hours in lots of cold water. When ready to cook, drain and rinse well. Transfer the soaked Black Beans to a pot and cover with plenty of cold water, at least 5-6 inches. Bring to a boil on high heat, and once boiling, reduce the heat to maintain a gentle rolling boil. Cook, slightly covered, until the beans are soft and tender, about 35-40 minutes. Drain and rinse well with cold water. Be careful not to overcook to avoid mushy beans.
Instant Pot Method
Soak the black beans overnight. Drain and rinse well with cold water. Add to Instant Pot and cover with about 1 inch of water. Cook on high pressure for 4 minutes. After the 4 minutes have passed, manually release. It is quite easy for the beans to become too soft so we recommend not letting them release pressure naturally. Drain and rinse under cold water.
If you do not wish to soak your black beans prior to cooking them you can still use your Instant Pot to achieve good results. Rinse your Black Beans thoroughly under cold water and drain well. Add to your Instant Pot and cover with about an inch of water. Cook on high pressure for 20 minutes, let sit for 10 minutes, then manually release. Strain and rinse with cold water.
Storage Tips
Once the Black Beans are cooked, we recommend to store them in the refrigerator covered in cold water. Navy Beans will keep for up to a week stored this way. We recommend to rinse the beans and replace the cold water every few days if you are storing them for more than 2-3 days.
Nutritional Notes
Black Beans are great for regulating your blood pressure. They are naturally low in sodium, but high in vitamins and minerals which help decrease your blood pressure as well as your blood sugar levels. Also, because they are low in cholesterol but high in fibre, Black Beans are excellent for your heart health.
Black Beans are not just high in fibre and protein; they also contain high amounts of iron and other vitamins and minerals which are contributors to maintaining healthy bones.
Like other legumes, Flourist Black Beans help you to feel full which is ideal for weight management. They also help with your digestion and are excellent for gut health. They can assist in increased energy and keep you full for longer, both of which are great for an overall healthy body.

Comments
Hi Barbara! The instructions just above the Instant pot instructions recommend 35-40 minutes for boiling on the stovetop after soaking. That is usually correct in my experience! I hope that helps!
Just wondering how to cook the beans if one does not have an Instant Pot?
Hello,
It would be useful to know the conversion value between dry beans to cooked volume for black beans and the other legumes that you sell.
Thank you.
